Heres how to look impressive in video calls, according to Hollywood experts
Heres how to look impressive in video calls, according to Hollywood expertsHeres how to look impressive in video calls, according to Hollywood expertsWhile a resume once consisted of a sheet of paper with your name, information, and experience, these days its a bit more complicated. Being a job hunter or professional at work means that in addition to the barest basics on paper, you likely have several additional versions of yourself you present to the world- most of them online. What does your LinkedIn profile pic or Twitter avatar say to the world? And while were on the subject, how do you look when youre Skyping or on a G-Chat? Are you perfectly poised and polished, or is your hair (and monitor) constantly askew? As video calls are becoming more popular for everything from interviews to conferences to daily catch-ups with remote teams, you have to step up your video game. It takes a lot of vigilance.Just ask BBC dad, prof Robert E. Kelly, who had perfectly arranged a room in his hous e for video interviews and spiffed himself up in a suit. Even so, an open door dashed his plans. While he benefitted from an adorable viral moment that he said was incredibly cute, it may not be so charming for you.We asked some experts to weigh in on tips for presenting your best visual self online.Elevate your angleLos Angeles-based photographer and Nikon Ambassador Joey Terrill, whose A-List portfolio includes Justin Bieber and Rihanna among others, says theres one major thing you can do to look better on video. If you use Skype or video chat, Terrill says The most important thing is to raise the camera lens on the laptop or phone to the level of your eyes- or even higher. He says you can use books or anything handy to raise the lens and avoid that dreaded view from below. Colleagues or potential interviewers dont want to look up your nose.A higher camera angle is much more flattering, and prevents you from appearing intimidating on the other persons screen. Placing the camera at e ye level will make you appear more natural, friendly, and conversational.Elevate your environment and attitudeBefore you even departure the interview, make sure youve set yourself up as a professional. Your background should convey you mean business- or at least, neatness. Organize those bookshelves, straighten pictures, and make sure the lighting isnt depressing.Self-described success strategistCarlota Zimmerman, JD, runs workshops on using social media to excel in the job market. Its hard to be taken seriously if the cat is walking across the keyboard, Zimmerman says.Three good ways to manage your video image Dress to impress in nice clothes you would wear to work anyway invest in noise-cancelling headphones to hear better write out your talking points so you remember what to say when the camera is on.Most of all, practice using the technology beforehand. There are few things worse than having to reschedule your video call because you cant get Skype or Google Hangouts to work, and it can make you look flaky.Light it upTerrill advises paying attention to the way youre illuminated during a video chat.Instead of using the overhead lighting in an office or bedroom. try turning in the direction of a north-facing window, or one that isnt receiving direct sunlight. This type of open shade will deliver flattering ohne umweg light to your face and surroundings.Another tip If the interview is at night, turn the room lights on and try placing a lamp with a shade directly behind your laptop screen. This will make the room appear naturally lighted, while the table lamp will add flattering light to your face and a catch light in your eye.Who knew?Look for tone and contrastTerrill, the photographer, told Ladders that dressing for your skin tone is one thing to consider. Different colors can transform skin tones experiment with what makes you look best.In general, Terrell said, people with lighter skin and hair colors tend to look more authoritative in darker clothing shade s because of the contrast in tonalities - while darker hair or skin tones have the same result when combined lighter colors.Get comfortable with the cameraWhether its on video or for a professional photo or headshot, the hardest part of being on camera is how nerve-wracking it can be for those of us not used to being photographed all the time. That anxiety even happens among professionals, Terrill said. Finding a level of comfort in front of the camera can sometimes be the biggest challenge in getting a great portrait of yourself. Being photographed is intimidating for nearly everyone- even people who are photographed for a living. He suggests finding a good pose - anything from resting your hands on a table during a video call or leaning against a doorway for a photo - which allows you to feel empowered and in control of your shot and adds to your comfort.Keep your online pictures up to dateA vorrcken or job change is probably the best time for an update to your online pictures on L inkedIn and other networks. Zimmerman told Ladders, your head-shot should be current, professional and relevant to your industry. If you change your hair, or your look, if you get a big promotion, or make a career transition, these are excellent reasons to keep updating your online branding.Zimmerman strongly advised paying attention to your audience for each of the pictures on your social media accounts Your colleagues in a bank are going to have a different impression of you than your college or high school friends. She reminded us that We all share the same internet. If all your social media is open to the public, your boss could at any time, seek you out on any platform. She also suggests keeping ensuring youre only tagged in professional photos. Leave the drunken escapades for more private networks, if at all, and make sure your privacy settings are set to thwart curiosity seekers.A key way to judge a good picture look as authentic as possible. WendyLewis, president of WendyLewis Co., says some of the biggest mistakes we see all the time are to recycle photos from a decade ago. Having a current headshot taken by a professional photographer is a good investment.Lewis also advises having both a high and low resolution version to keep on file as needed. Go for a warm, friendly, natural pose so when people meet you for the first time, they say, I recognized you from your photo. You want to look like yourself but polished and approachable.Fight the shineCameras and video cameras are notoriously unforgiving, highlighting oily areas and blemishes. Men and women both can take tips from makeup akrobat Hillary Kline, although, naturally, women are the vast majority of makeup consumers.Use a setting powder or oil blotting sheets to make sure you dont look shiny its all heightened on camera because the light reflects off those areas.Concealer is your friend. Nothing is worse than waking up with dark under eyecircles or having a blemish on a big day such as an interview via Skype, etc. Invest in a quality concealer and apply under your eye area with a concealer brush. If you have a blemish, place concealer on the blemish and blend.Define your features. Mascara will emphasize your eyes. Blush and contour will make sure your face keeps its shape on camera. Strong brows frame the face, so make sure theyre neatly groomed and filled in with a pencil, if necessary.Armed with the perspective of experts, you can make your next video call your most polished and professional one yet.

Women dont have to be these alluring, mysterious cats who get things done and you dont know how hard they work, how hard they work out, what theyre eating. We now celebrate the fact that women can say, Yeah, I sacrificed this It isnt effortless.Kaling observed hard work firsthand from watching her parents, who she said never took vacations. Keep things movingOnce youre ready to hire, dont drag your feet. Review resumes promptly and schedule interviews one to two days out, rather than weeks. If a candidate is applying for a position, its because theyre ready to make a move. If you want the best talent, moving fast will be an impressive differentiator from many other experiences that candidates have.TechnologyAdvice gets feedback all the time about how appreciative candidates are that they heard back on their application so soon, or how impressive it is that were able to maintain such a thorough process while advancing through it so quickly.Being upfront and prompt keeps everyone on the same page and saves both the candidate and hiring team time. After all, if youre not doing it right, someone else will.Shayleen Stuto, Talent Development Manager, TechnologyAdviceAvoid missing out on great talent by speeding up the hiring process shayleen_stutoClick To Tweet3. Give candidates a taste of your cultureWe believe introducing a candidate to your culture is the best way to create a positive experience during the interview process. There is a common misconception that culture is about giving people things like free shirts, a stocked fridge, or the best equipment, but we believe culture is about giving people experiences theyll carry with them for the rest of their lives. The first experience you have with someone is the interview process, so make it about more than just the two o f you talking across a desk. Do something outlandish and get to know this person for who they truly are. Theyll see you as a different kind of company if you break up the monotony of the interviewing process.Steve Jobs commonly took people on walks to interview them. We often take them out to lunch and see if they can handle the fruchtwein important form of multi-tasking eating and speaking. This happens in executive recruiting all the time, but in a competitive job market you need to stand out from the competition and instantly wow your candidates with what you do the first time you bring them into the office.Taylor Wallace, Co-Founder, WeVueTips from taywall on how to make the interview more interestingClick To Tweet4. Show a little respectAlways make the candidate feel valued and respected. I always follow up with every applicant and inform them if they are moving on in the process or not. There is nothing worse to a candidate than hearing nothing back regarding the positions th ey have applied for. When the candidate feels valued and respected, it raises the bar. Additionally, when a candidate sees that you treat them well, they tend to ramp up their performance to meet the expectations and show that the respect was not misplaced.Jennifer Maffei, Founder President, Virtual EA Services, LLCCandidateExperience tip from VEASvcs ALWAYS make the candidate feel valued and respectedClick To Tweet5. Be direct and helpfulMany companies (including Fortune 500) are not treating candidates with respect during the interview process. They think they are in the drivers seat, so they think they can keep a candidate waiting for an hour for an interview, not provide follow up on candidacy, not provide a warm environment, etc. This impacts their bottom line because, even if the company does not hire the person, they still need to create an amazing experience because otherwise it can ruin the companys reputation. You want every candidate to be brand ambassadors for your compan y.So with every candidate we make them feel special. We not only interview them but we extensively coach them, as well, because we want them to succeed in their career. The candidates are very grateful for our direct and helpful approach, which has built a strong candidate referral system for us. It is not too difficult to get it right with candidates treat them well, show you care, and communicate.Gail Tolstoi-Miller, CEO and Chief Staffing Strategist, ConsultnetworxEven if you dont plan on hiring a candidate, keep the interview positive GailTolstoiMillClick To Tweet6. Lose the tieI dont wear a tie. Job candidates get nervous when I don my business outfit and introduce myself as the CEO. It instantly puts them on a defensive mode, then all they do is try to impress me instead of having an actual conversation about themselves and their qualifications.I also abhor having a desk between me and the candidate. I use the couches in the reception area its as if were just chatting in ou r living room Its also my way to test how comfortable and focused the candidate can be in a busy environment.Lets be honest. Everybody starts out cheerful and productive until they pass their probation period. So I think long-term with hiring. When candidates have a positive experience, they relax and really let their personality show. Then I get to know how they will perform in the long run. I want to know the person because Im interested in hiring a team member, not a worker bee.Idan Shipzear, CEO, 911 RestorationConversation Intimidation 7 Ways to Create a Top-of-the-Line Candidate ExperienceClick To Tweet7. Set a good exampleMy best advice in regards to creating a positive candidate experience is to meet with any staff that will be in contact and help them to understand that you are hosting the candidate. If a sales manager is performing part of the interview, they should not be checking their phone, should be smiling, and giving their undivided attention to the candidate. The candidate should feel special and see that employees at the business are deemed valuable. The person being interviewed should never feel as if they are a burden, whether that is being forced to wait, or someone being preoccupied while interviewing them. Whether or not the particular candidate is hired, it sets a precedent of respect and value to people that could be working for your company, and could set you apart from other firms.Bill Fish, Founder President, Reputation ManagementGive your undivided attention to candidates to ensure a positive interview experience billafishClick To TweetHow do you strive to create a positive candidate experience? 15 simple exercises to increase your self-awareness
15 simple exercises to increase yur self-awareness15 simple exercises to increase yur self-awarenessSelf-awareness is the first step for rollealgrowth. To know ourselves allows us to take the reins of our life. Self-awareness helps you landsee yourself clearly - itilluminates your blind spotsso you can live mora intentionally rather than on autopilot.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraMost of us are more unaware than aware. Thats why practicing self-awareness reveals whatwe dont know we dont knowabout ourselves. Self-awareness is a never-ending journey - even for those who know themselves well.Increased self-awareness can turn you into a better leader - both personally and professionally. Self-aware persons make better decisions, are more creative andcollaborative.Enjoy these self-awareness exercises. Give them a try and see which work for you. Know yourself lead yourself.1. Who are you? This is a simple, yet profound, exercise. It works better when you practice it with someone else, but you can do it on your own too.You have to answer one question Who are you? - over and over. The exercise is pretty straightforward one person asks Who are You? and the other responds whatever comes to mind. The first person keeps asking Who are you? right after each answer. This goes on for two minutes, and then people switch roles the person who responded now gets to ask Who are you?It feels silly and simple, but fruchtwein people struggle as they have to continue answering who they are. Initially, people share obvious things - their names, jobs, relationships, hobbies, etc. But, as the exercise progresses, it becomes harder and harder. Thats precisely the point - to peel the multiple layers of our identity.Reflect on the experience. Do you tend to associate your identity to your profession or relationship status? Did any of your responses surprise you? What have you disco vered about yourself? Did the exercise remind you of some forgotten or hidden areas of who you are?We contain multitudes, as Walt Whitman wrote. Understanding thatyour identity is fluid and complexis essential to improve your self-awareness.2. Monitor your intern voiceThe words we use every day have a profound impact - language shapes our relationship with people, things, and ourselves.Talking to oneself is one the most natural, yet undervalued, skills we have. It stimulates self-reflection, increases motivation, and connect us with our emotions.Researchby Canadian professor Alain Morin shows theres a high correlation between talking to oneself more frequently and a higher self-awareness and self-evaluation.The quality of your inner speech is critical - the more positive your words, the better. Pay attention to your inner voice.Would you allow anyone to speak to you the way you talk to yourself?Pay attention to the way you respond to both your successes and failures. Your inner vo ice creates feedback-loops - you can turn them into a negative or positive experience. The way you talk to yourself is the way you love yourself. Choose your words carefully.Words like I cant, I should, or I have to limit our potential by creating a negative attitude - either we dont trust in our potential, or we are addressing a task as a burden. Check out the following post to learn how to reframe your negative inner-dialogue into a positive one.3. Your superpower and kryptoniteAccepting our whole self - flaws included - is vital for self-appreciation.The purpose of this exercise is to reconnect with both your negative and positive sides and understand that neither is good or bad - howwe use them can help or harm us.Write down whats your Superpower and whats your Kryptonite - just one in each case.Let me share mine as an example. My Superpower is my ability to come up with an insight or idea that connect things that seem unrelated. My Kryptonite is being impatient - I get a nxious when people take too much time to respond or do something.Neither is good or bad. If I use my impatience wisely, I can drive people into action. However, if Im always impatient, then Ill drive everyone crazy. saatkorn with my Superpower - it can harm me if I overplay it.I suggest that you departure with one first, and then build a full list of all your Kryptonite and Superpowers.Reflect on what they say about you? How do you usually use them? How can you adjust your Superpower or Kryptonite, so they help you, elendlage hurt you?4. Write morning pagesThis exercise comes from the bookAn Artists Way.There are many iterations out there.Writing Morning Pages is very useful to produce insights, calm anxieties, and resolve problems. As soon as you wake up, grab a piece of paper and write everything that comes to mind. Dont filter anything - you want to declutter your mind. The recommendation is to compose three pages of stream-of-consciousness writing. Some people do more. Others s et a time limit - 15 to 20 minutes. Doing it in the morning is ideal. You want to let everything out before your mind gets busy and starts filtering things.Writing Morning Pages can help you unblock emotions, discover ideas that were at an unconscious level, or identify areas for development. When you let your words flow, without any rational filter, you set your creativity free.Morning Pages are private you dont need to filter your words. Some people use them as a warm-up and then destroy them without checking what they wrote. Others use them as a source of inspiration or self-reflection. See what works for you. This exercise is an unfiltered version of journaling - it will help you know yourself better and become more appreciative too.5. Perception/ realityThe purpose of this exercise is to compare your self-image with what others think of you.List the top five words that describe who you are. Then ask ten people - a mix of friends, family and work colleagues - to provide their list (the five words that best describeyou). Its critical that people agree to be candid. I suggest they send their words via emaille or text versus doing it in person. Compare their responses to your own list. What are the similarities? What are the differences? What surprised you about peoples feedback? Why?How do opinions from family and co-workers differ from each other? What does that tell you about how you behave in different environments?6. The three whysThis technique was initially developed bySakichi Toyodaand was used by Toyota to evolution its manufacturing approach. It explores the cause-and-effect relationships underlying a particular problem. By repeating the question Why? you dig deeper into the root cause. This exercise is a shorter version - you get to ask Why? three times only.Ricardo Semler, a champion of employee-friendly and radical corporate democracy workdistributions-mixs, suggests that we can gain greater wisdom by simply asking three Whys? in a row about ever ything we are doing. He says that for the first Why? you always have a good answer for. The second Why? becomes more difficult to answer. The third one makes you realize that, most probably, you dont know what you are doing. You can apply this when you are about to make a decision, or you are feeling confused and dont know whats going on. Or to answer any question in your life. Or to come up with new ideas or solutions.Semler says that by asking Why? three times, you get more clarity about who you are and why you are here.7. Record yourABCsAlbert Elliss ABC Model is a significant part of his rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT) - a precursor to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).The basic idea behind the ABC model is thatexternal events(A) do not cause emotions , but our beliefs do (B).Though this exercise is very effective for dealing with an adverse event, you can use it in normal situations too. It will help you reflect on how you react to events so you can do better next time .Activating eventthat triggers your inner dialogueBeliefsyou formed after the eventConsequencesor how you feelThis formula will help you understand your response to stressful situations. People react differently to similar events - the ABC model increases your awareness. The idea is to learn how to turn automatic negative thoughts into positive ones.Imagine theres a traffic jam, and you are running late to work. You may become anxious imagining that you wont make it on time for a meeting with your boss. This might cause you to start shouting at others or blowing your horn. Alternatively, you might choose to relax and focus on what you can control - you might call and inform your boss you wont make it on time or that youll take the meeting from your phone. The ABC model is a very effective way to reflect on our behaviors and adjust how we react - especially to events we cannot control.8. Your best and worst selfThe purpose of this exercise is to help you acknowledge what drives you (or not) by getting input from other people. They just have to answer two questionsWhen did you see me the most excited? When did you see me the most frustrated? Its important that people choose one event per question. And that they provide a Why?Invite people that know you really well - either personally or professionally. Get five to six answers at least. Compare findings and reflect on what motivates you and what gets you stuck. What surprised you about peoples feedback? Why?Is there any particular theme, either in what frustrated or excited you?Are there any specific tasks, topics, people, or moments associated with frustrating or exciting moments?9. Write your own obituaryThe purpose of this exercise is to focus your life on what really matters to you. To live the way you want to be remembered. As Mahatma Gandhi said, Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. An obituary usually captures our best self - who we were, what we did, and what we achie ved. Here you will write it while you are alive, rather than someone else doing it for you. Focusing on how you want to be remembered, will clarify whats important to you.I use this exercise in some of ourchange leadership workshops. Writing ones obituary is not easy - people freak out a little initially. Thinking about ones death is moving. However, being reminded that our lives dont last forever, builds a sense of urgency - it provides clarity and focus.Go on. Write your own obituary. Take the exercise seriously, not yourself. If you are humorous, let your epitaph be fun too. Use the following template.Start by writing your namethe way youd like it to look on your tombstone. You can add a nickname too.In one line, how did you make the world a better place?Be concise. The more focused, the more honest youll be with yourself.Write down how people will remember you.Avoid pompous language. Stick to the tone and words that regular people would use - especially those who know you wel l. Thewhyis essential (once again, you dont need the full laundry list). This part requires more introspection.Look yourself into the mirror and answer without filtering Who was the real you? Not your masks or titles or roles. What was your essence? What made you unique?Saying yes is easy. What we say no to defines who we really are. Which was in your case? What were the temptations, distractions, or possibilities that you said no to because they would derail you from achieving your goals?Who will miss you the most? This seems easy, but its not. The answer is not about what you wish, but trying to understand who willreallymiss you. A lot of people will do for sure. But who were those people to whom you meant something special? Once again, avoid judging yourself. Being honest is what makes this exercise meaningful. Now its time to be creative. The previous steps provided the background now its time to bring it your epitaph to life. Write down in one or two paragraphs the words that you wo uld love someone to say about you once youve departed. This is the most critical part of the exercise. Connect with your true essence, not your vanity.Download a high res copy of the template here.10. Ask for Feedback, RegularlyThere are two types of self-awareness internal and external. The first one is how well you know yourself the latter is about knowing how others see you.We all have blind spots that affect our behaviors - feedback is crucial for us to see our unknown unknowns. Asking for regularconstructive feedbackhelps fight self-deceit. Get input from different sources, not just your best friends or freund.Pay attention dont filter what you hear. We tend to accept feedback that is aligned with our view of self and reject feedback that doesnt match our view of reality. Writing down what people tell you - without judging what you hear - can help you overcome this bias. The moreinteresting the questionsyou ask, the more productive the feedback. Ive always loved the What shou ld I start/continue/ stop doing? approach - its action-driven. Effective feedback should focus on your behavior, not on who you are or your beliefs.Once again, find people that can provide an objective, constructive, and rich view. Feedback is like sex. Everyone does it, butfew do it well.11. Get an accountability partnerWe cannot improve our behaviors on our own - the support of like-minded people helps us overcome barriers and limiting beliefs. Getting an Accountability Partner increases your chances of achieving your goals or developing new habits. When you commit your goals to someone, your probability raises to 65%. If you create a specific accountability appointment with a person, the odds increase to 95%.Marshall Goldsmith, the founder of the namesake coaching firm, is a perfect example of the power of having an accountability partner.Every night, a friend calls him to ask him 22 questions. This process helps Goldsmith reflect if hes honest with himself, if he is doing his b est, and identifying areas for personal growth. You dont have to go that extreme. But, the example is clear evidence that even self-aware people, like a longtime life coach, know that they must continually build self-awareness.An accountability partner agreement is the foundation of a reciprocal relationshipeach member coaches and helps the other achieve professional or personal success. The partnership is established by an agreement that defines how the relationship would work.Start by committing to one behavior you want to change focusing is critical.Choose one behavior you want to change/ improve.Establish clear metrics to measure progress.Define rules of engagement. What coaching style do you expect from your partner? Do you want your partner just to listen or also to challenge you? Do you expect feedback in the form of advice, tips or questions? Clarify whats confidential. What other things should your partner know about you or the behavior you want to change?Establish regular to uch points. Both partners need to agree on the frequency, date, duration, etc. Also, will you be meeting in person or online?Download your copy of the Accountability Partner agreement12. The JohariWindowThis tool is ideal for increasing self-awareness. It focuses on understanding whats visible (or not) to us and others. Our blind spots lie at the intersection of howweperceive ourselves and howothersperceive us.The Johari Windowwas developed by Psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham to help us become more self-aware.I use it regularly when working with organizations to increase both self andteam awareness.ARENATraits and behaviors that both yourself and others are aware of. It includes anything about yourself that you are willing to share. This area drives clarity and builds trust.MASKAspects about yourself that you are aware of but might not want others to know. It can also include traits that you are not sharing with others without you being aware of. What you show to others is a mask that hides your authentic selfas I wrote here.BLIND SPOTSWhat others perceive, but you dont. Important to note not valuing your strengths can also be a blind spot. Feedback from others can make you more aware of your negative traits but also of the positive ones you are not appreciating.UNCONSCIOUSWhats unknown to both you and anyone else.Though this matrix has four quadrants, the size of each is not necessarily equal. Each window pane will vary depending onHow much you share with other peopleHow well others (try to) know youHow well you know yourselfYou can expand your Arena area byDisclosing more about yourself, thus reducing the Mask areaUncovering more about your Unconscious areaBecoming aware of your Blind areaThe place to start in the Johari window is in the open area. Make some notes about yourself.Involve other people and ask for feedback about yourself - ask each person to provide five phrases to describe you. Be prepared to seriously consider the feedback you get. That doesnt mean that you have to do everything that people tell you.13. The wheel of lifeThis tool is straightforward to use and increases self-awareness by assessing the key areas in your life. Dont confuse it with the Buddhists Wheel of Life. The Wheel of Life has eight categories Career, Money, Health, Friends Family, Significant Other, Personal Growth, Fun Recreation, and Physical Environment. You can replace the names or categories to adapt it to your reality.Use a 110 scale to assess each area, where 1 is closest to the center of the circle and 10 is at the edge of it - the highest level of satisfaction. You can also apply colors to highlight each area. Put yourself in a quiet place and remove all distractions. This exercise can take you between 15 to 30 minutes. Dont rush it. And be honest with yourself.CareerIs your career where you want it to be by now? Are you satisfied with what you are doing? Reflect on job satisfaction versus career satisfaction.MoneyAre you earning enough income to satisfy your current needs? Do you have a clear plan for the future? Are you saving money or suffering from high-debt stress?HealthHow physically fit are you? Are you satisfied with your eating habits? How would you rate your physical activity?Friends FamilyDo you have people that you can count on? Do you have a support network? Do the people around you help you grow?Significant OtherDo you feel loved, understood, and respected? Do you have a partner that satisfies you? How strong is your relationship?Personal GrowthDo you have a clear purpose in life? What about your spiritual life? What are your goals and priorities? Are you satisfied with your personal development? Do you spend enough time to learn, reflect, and improve your knowledge and behaviors?Physical EnvironmentDoes the place you live in satisfy you? Do you take care of your environment to help you succeed? Do you have a safe space for reflection or relaxation? Are you satisfied with the places you usuall y visit? The purpose of scoring is not to feel overly confident or sad about how each area performs, but to understand if you areliving a well-balanced life.Reflect. Are you putting too much energy or time into specific areas? Are others being neglected or postponed? Ask the 3 Whys?Set up goals for improvement - 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. Rerun the assessment and monitor your progress. Self-awareness is not just about understanding who you are and how you live, but also to track improvements.14. Name your emotionsWe are continually experiencing emotions. Sometimes, we dont pay attention to what we feel. Others, we overreact without realizing whats triggering our behavior. This exercise will help you familiarize with your feelings. Practice labeling your emotions as they happen. Close your eyes and focus on your emotions. Name them without passing judgment. Feeling upset is not the same as being angry, sad, or frustrated. Most of the times, we mix our emotions. Check this post to learn to discriminate different feelings.Becoming more aware of how you feel can help you uncover what affects your mood but, most importantly, to avoid overreacting because you are not fully aware of what you are feeling. The more you get to know your feelings, the less they willcloud your judgment.15. Reflect on past decisionsSelf-awareness also feeds from our past actions. Learn to reflect on the actual impact of your decisions. Reflect on what you can do differently next time.As Peter Drucker wrote, Whenever you make a decision or take a key decision, write down what you expect will happen. Nine or 12 months later, compare the results with what you expected. He called this self-reflection processfeedback analysisand believed it was the only way to discover our strengths. The Jesuits, a strict religious order within the Catholic Church, practice something similar. Whenever they are about to make an important decision, they write down what they expect will happen and how they arrive d at a conclusion. Nine months later, they compare the actual results with their expectations.Reflecting on past decisions will help youBecome more aware of how you make decisionsRealize what worked and what didntNotice your usual biasesImprove your decision-making processFailing smartrequires improving your perspective - learn from present mistakes, but also to observe things through times. 41 Unusual Career Tips From a Recruiter
41 Unusual Career Tips From a Recruiter 41 Unusual Career Tips From a Recruiter There is no opening act. Lets just get started1. Dont Ask HowDont ask how you can help. Do your research and figure out a way to help. When people emaille and ask how they can help, it creates more work for me. Now I have to think of how they can help. I dont know them or what they are good at.Ive emailed senior people before with the saatkorn question. The web holds more information now thanit did the day before. Do your research, figure out what is valuable, and then email and deliver.2. Work for FreeYes, you must work for free. Its elend popular or scalable. I dont care. You have to be willing to do what others wont to get what others cannot. Ryan Holiday followed a similar strategy when he started working for Tucker Max, Robert Greene, and Tim Ferriss. You wont always have to give your work away, but you may need to sometimes in order to get ahead.3. Do Your ResearchBefore any career move, you need to research the company, product, and founders extensively. Great opportunities wont fall into your lap (unless a quality recruiter finds you).Dont take a job because you applied and they made an offer. Research the company. Learn about their industry, competitors, and unique advantages. Are they a commodity business that the bottom will soon fall out of?4. Research Includes Checking Out the kollektiv, TooIf you are invited in for an interview, it is not a meet and greet it is a trial. Come prepared with a story and well-thought-out questions, like a lawyer would. You need to landsee how strong the companys/departments team is. Ask qualifying questions that get the information you need to make your decision. The skill level of the team is more important than the compensation package. You can learn invaluable lessons from an experienced team of peers and leaders.5.Research Also Includes the Leadership TeamThis is critical. Businesses become extensions of their founders and executive te ams.Are the leaders of this company experienced in this field? Do they know how to recruit strong team members? Have they exited before? What incubator selected them? How are their egos? These are all questions I ask before joining a company. You should know the leadership teamsbackground from college forward.6. Determine Your Ideal Company SizeSome love to work in the hectic environments of startups, wearing many hats at once, whereas others like to focus their efforts on specialized niches in larger companies. Company size determines the kind of work you do and the things you learn.7. Learn About Your ManagerYou dont always interview with your future manager. Find out who your manager is going to be. Find out if you will be interviewing with them. Do not accept a role without knowing who you will be working for and what they will be like as a manager.8. Steal From the BestLearn what everyone around you does. Listen to them in meetings. Listen to how they interact with customers on the phone. Pay attention to how managers get their employees to do work. Steal the top performers best techniques and strategies. Practice them until they become your own.9. Be a Person, Not a BrandEveryone is worried about becoming a brand. That comes later if you are lucky. Focus on being a person and connecting with other people. Say Hello and Thank you. Call people by their names. Treat people like people. Treat them how you want to be treated. Work on your skills. You are not a brand you are human.10. Follow the 40 Percent RuleIm tired. I have done enough for one day. This is a lie. You just lied to yourself. We all do it. Just adopt the 40 percent rule When you think youve reached your limit, youre only 40 percent of the way done. When you believe you are too tired to go on and have given it your all, recognize this is not true. Your mind set that limit. It is a self-imposed limit, and you can surreisepass it. Strive for another 40 percent. You can do it.11. Solicit FeedbackFi nd someone you can trust who will give you candid feedback. In some companies, people hide bad news or sugarcoat the truth to keep from hurting others. Most people only tell you the things you do well.I once worked with the vice president of a company on an app I was developing. At one point, he told me Your user interface looks like crap. I wrote down his exact words and thanked him for his feedback. He was the only customer who told us the truth.Find someone who will give you honest even if harsh feedback. If you want to grow, you need this valuable perspective.12. Follow UpEveryone sends emails, takes notes, and does work but no one follows up. Ive received my share of emails from recruiters and founders asking me to join their companies, but only a handful ever actually follow up. Talk to these people. Some have hired me. It can happen to you, too.13. During Interviews, Ask Open-Ended QuestionsAsk open-ended how and what questions e.g., What were you hired to do here? or How will you measure the success of the candidate who accepts this role? These questions are powerful because they require more than a simple yes or no. People often reveal details about their thought processes, values, and beliefs when answering open-endedquestions.14. Leave When You Have ToMost people dont learn this until late in their careers, but you must leave jobs to continue to grow and earn more. But I have a good job, and they treat me okayIt depends on what you want. If you have been at the same company in the same role for a long time, you cannot complain about feeling stagnate orthat you arent compensated fairly.15. Connect the DotsIts good to have goals and an ideal destination in mind. However, things change. That ideal destination no longer shines. You learn something that spins you off into a newcareer direction. Pay attention to these moments. You cant connect the dots looking forward you can only connect them looking backward. Steve Jobs16. Only Work on Things That Int erest YouYou can always make more money as an investment banker but does the money really interest you? Spend time defining your interests.Focus your workon them.17. Drink Coffee Three CupsIf you dont like coffee, thats fine. You can drink other things that have caffeine. No caffeine = no energy and no creativity. Drink three cups, then get to it18. Improve Your Cold Email SkillsCold-emailing is a superpower. Cold emails give you access to people you normally cannot reach. They also open doors for jobs and business deals.19. Market YourselfYou could be the best person at your job, but does anyone know it? You must market yourself for people to find you and recognize your accomplishments. Is your LinkedIn up to date? Does it describe what you do?You dont have to be a writer. Hire someone on Fiverr to help you write your resume or LinkedIn bio.20. Move Jobs Every 18-24 MonthsWe dont live in the same worldas our parents did. Two years at a job is, for us, equivalent to 20 years at a j ob for them.Think strategically about your companys competitors that may want to hire you. What company would you love to work for? Send a cold email, find out what the organization needs, and see what lines up for you.21. Spend Time With Your BossesThe problem with networking is people do it wrong and with the wrong people. I dont like the term networking because it suggestshappy hours where you pass business cards around and leave without building relationships. A week later, a sales guy contacts you about buying his product.Spend time with your customers. Better yet, spend time with your bosses and future bosses. Invite them to work out with you or to a social event that matches their interests.22. Never Eat AloneIt may be common for people to eat their lunch in front of their computers, alone. Dont do it. Invite someone to have lunch with you in the break room. Get to know the people you work with. Invite new people to join you for lunch. Be the person who gets people together. Be the person who makes work fun.23. Stay lateOne of my managers didnt come to life until 630 p.m. My peers never got to see him in his element. They left the office at 5 p.m. Stay late. Stay at least an hour or two after most people leave. You can accomplish many tasks in this time and build the best relationships.24. Come in EarlyGet into the office an hour or two before the standard. This gives you an edgeand it gives you undistracted time to practice your craft. The rest of the week will look effortless on your part if you come in early a few times each week.25. Find a Plus, a Minus, and an EqualIn your friendship and professional circles, work to make connections with at least one of each(+) Plus Someone a level or two above you who from whom you can learn.(-) Minus Someone a level or two junior to you whom you can help and teach.(=) Equal Someone at your level.26. Ask for $12,000 MoreNever accept a companys first job offer. Ask for $12,000 more than the anfangsbuchstabe offer. Ive seen too many candidates negotiate for $3,000 extra. That comes out to an extra $250 per month before taxes. If you are going to negotiate, make sure it is worth the effort. An additional $1,000 per month can make a big difference.27.Track Your AccomplishmentsWrite down two accomplishments you areproud of each week. At the end of each month, youll have a list of eight things you are proud of, maybe more. When its time for your performance review, make sure to call attention to these items.28. Choose YourselfJobs can choose you, but you can choose yourself at any time. Never apply to only one job. Hedge your bets by applying to a few roles or favorite companies at a time. Power comes from having options. You may find the company you wanted to work for does not want you. You can choose another role.Or you can choose yourself. You can always do your own thing. People tie too much self-worth to companies they work for or titles they hold. You are valuable beyond measure. You can alw ays choose yourself.29. Negotiate the PercentageWere thrilled to offer you a 6 percent raise That might be okay if your performance is average, but if you are a star performer, thats not a fair raise.Take time to review and consider each raise offer. Then, ask for a few percentage points more. Demonstrate the value you create. Most employers do whatever they can to keep top performers.30. Break Up When You Need toIts okay to break up with your coworkers and friends if you have to. Maybe your career is going in a different direction. Are your peers a good influence on you and your family? If not, break up. Think carefully about the influences you allow into your life.31. Consider the SourceFriends, family, and coworkers will always give free career advice. Im giving you advice, and we dont even know each other. Always consider the source of the information you receive. You wouldnttake financial advice from someone who is broke, so why take career advice from someone who is career poo r or who is unfamiliar with your role/industry?32. Show, Dont TellWhen you have an idea, create a rough draft or mockup of what the ideal might look like. Take a screenshot of a similar app or site, then annotate it to communicate your spin on it.Showing is powerful. Your boss can see your idea come to lifeand make a more informed decision. No one reads business plans. Show potential customers what you mean. Create a prototype and get it into peopleshands. Watch how they interact with it. Listen for their questions and feedback.33. Go Into HidingIf you decide to leave your job tostart a company or develop a product, its okay to hide for a little while youwork on it. Thats part of ideation. Protect your idea as if itwere a newborn child.Dont let people discourage you or keep you from working on what is important to you but dont hide in the dark for too long, either. You might end up creating something that only you want to buy.34. Ask for Dirty JobsYoure probably familiar with Mike Rowe and his show, Dirty Jobs.He has fun, cracks jokes, and looks good doing the dirtiest jobs. If you can look good doing the worst jobs, you can do anything.Dont ask for the glamorous jobs or projects while you are coming up. Do the jobs no one wants. These jobs keep your ego in check while you develop your skills and work ethic.35. Dont Worry About What Other People ThinkIf the people closest to you dont quite see your vision or understand it, that is okay. Dont be afraid of them or of what they will say about you. Remember, they cant kill or eat you.36.Throw Everything Away and Start OverI learned this from the comedian Louis C.K. One of the things he does that makes him successful is that every year or two, he scraps his entire show. New year, new material.Dont be afraid to start over and create new material.37. Be AuthenticTo be authentic, you have to tell the truth. Be authentic at work, with your boss, at home. Always tell the truth. If you believe something is low quality, say so. Dont be a yes-man.38. Have an OpinionIf all ten people in a meeting agree and say the same thing, I should fire nine of them. I do not hire for agreement. I need people to challenge my perspective and come up with fresh ideas. I hire people who are smarter thanI am, people who are passionate and have opinions they are not afraid to share.Be different. Be opinionated. Stand out.39. Deliver ValueThere are things you have to do at work, andthere are things you do to add value. Deliver value with every keystroke. Dont focus on busywork.40. Get Eight Hours of SleepPeople brag about working 12+ hours a day and sleeping for three before doing it again. Research shows 7-8 hours is optimal. Find what works for you.41. Set Deadlines for YourselfA goal is a dream with a deadline. Napoleon HillGet the most out of your performance by setting a deadline for yourself. If you are new to ahabit or skill, set a realistic deadline for mastering it. If you are good at meeting deadlines, try se tting a hard, unrealistic deadline for yourself. You may not be able to accomplish the task within the deadline, but growth occurs when you accept challenges. Or you may find a new path that allows you to accomplish more with much, much less.Clinton Buelter is the founder of ColdEmailForRecruiters.
