The Top 10 Career Advice Sites You Should Be Following IM HIRED

The Top 10 Career Advice Sites You Should Be Following Finding those Hidden Career Advice Gems We all need a bit of advice now and then and your job search is no exception, so why is finding the right place to get good and accurate advice so difficult? Just google career advice and youll be flooded with hundreds of options (no doubt the first few pages being crowded with job boards) so knowing what advice to taking can be overwhelming. Before I started my own career advice blog, I was like yourself, searching for relevant sites so I could read up on the latest career advice and then share these tips of the trade with my applicants. But there is no need for you to spend hours scrolling through sites to find first-rate guidance as I want to let you in on a secret; there are some fantastic, hidden (granted some less hidden than others) blogs out there written by the experts and I am going to give you the list. Might sounds strange that I am doing this list right? (if you hadnt noticed Im a career advice blogger myself) Well I understand that a job seeker needs a variety of resources to help them get hired so after you have read my blog on Sunday, I want to give you somewhere to go on Monday. Classy Career Girl From finding a job, to setting up a business and even tips on how to take control of your finances this blog is packed with expert advice. The site is written by women looking to support other women become successful in their own careers. It was named  one of Forbes 35 Most Influential Career Sites and that is definitely a deserved award. Approximately posting three times a week, and when youre done reading listen to their podcast or check out their Youtube channel. Career Contessa   Another career site for women run by women, which is all about helping you achieve your goals. Made up of articles, courses, webinars and a built in job board means however you best absorb career advice this blog has got that box ticked for you. My suggestion would be to check out their interview series; they conduct regular interviews with successful entrepreneurs and thriving professionals giving you the motivation and the steps to accomplish your goals. 9 to 5 Project The 9-5 Project offer CV writing services and career related courses but their blog is a real personal approach to the job search. Going from articles such as the number of questions your resume needs to answer to what colours you should be wearing in an interview, this blog has an entertaining and informative style. Strange Coincidence this blogger is a featured writer at The Muse, another blog on this list. Career Builder Primarily a job board, it does also have a career advice blog on the side. You need to be following them on twitter if you like a good meme (Im forever retweet them as I love a funny work meme) but they do also throw some useful advice in their as well. The articles vary from how to be productive to is being nice at work holding you back? as well as posts covering locally focused job news. Full Time Friends A site I recently discovered and the newest site on the list but that doesnt mean they dont know what they are talking about. Written by six women who started the site as a creative outlet, the site is packed with honest articles about everything from how to raise your salary to 10 GIFs to describe women in the workplace. They say they want to be  unapologetically real and they are! They also do a spotlight section which highlights expert writers so you get a real mixture of voices. Levo What doesnt this site have! Podcasts, celebrity interviews, expert advice and articles. Made up of contributors, the articles can be written by CEOs, influences, recruiters, teachers and that list really does go on and on. Their people section means you can actually find out about all the people behind the stories. Its a lot more than career advice, their article also cover topics such as Self-Care and Mental Health issues. The Muse A one stop shop for articles written by a range of career advice experts, even giving you a section to search for local career advisers. As the site is made up of several guest writers, you get to read excellent real life stories, which draw on the writers personal experiences of the job search and progressing within their career. Whether you want videos, top 10 lists or advice on suitable career related courses then you will be spoilt for choice. Jobacle This blog has been running since 2005 after the owner saw a gap in the market for real and honest career advice. A straight to the point approach to offering up advice on the job search merged with some real light-hearted entertaining posts. If you want to know the best games for office Olympics then this site has you sorted! The Balance The Balance was set up as a financial site helping you to achieve financial empowerment, however its career section is a mixtures of top 10 guides (including best paying careers, where to look for work and benefits of working as a freelancer) as well as articles covering all aspects of the recruitment process. I included this site as it truly is a collaboration showcasing articles from a variety of HR and recruitment professionals who know all the right advice to give. The Guardian Yes its a paper but I am not suggesting it for the news. Less of a how to guide site but more aimed at articles that reflect and discuss peoples experiences with certain professions or discussing hot topics currently affecting the recruitment industry. Its also a job board so once you have your advice why not browse a few jobs. Dont feel like you have to do it alone when it comes to the job search, there is a lot of expert advice just round the corner.

3 Places To Pack Your LinkedIn Profile With Keywords - Work It Daily

3 Places To Pack Your LinkedIn Profile With Keywords - Work It Daily Trying to get attention with your LinkedIn profile? It’s easier than you think - especially if you’ve employed a strong keyword strategy. Here’s why you should power up your pack your LinkedIn profile with keywords: The more skills and job titles that match recruiter searches for candidates, the higher volume of traffic your profile will receive. In turn, better traffic means you’re more likely to be the target of a great new job. 3 Places To Pack Your LinkedIn Profile With Keywords If you’re lacking in keyword knowledge, but need to be found more often on LinkedIn, add keywords in these critical places on your profile: 1. Your Headline Not only will a keyword-centric Headline help your profile traffic, it just looks better to employers. So, replace “Operations and Production at XYZ Company” (the default from your current position) to “Operations Director Manager. Cost Savings from Lean Six Sigma Process Improvements in Aluminum Manufacturing.” The same goes for “Unemployed and Looking,” which only tells employers you’re desperate. Instead, pull in a job title and some skill sets (“IT Director | Infrastructure Applications | IT Roadmaps | Global Growth Strategy, ERP, Business Transformation”) that convey your value-add. 2. Your Summary Along with a powerful opening line that stirs interest, your LinkedIn Summary should contain keywords relevant to your goal: “Creating over-goal revenue by zeroing in on untapped markets is how I’ve blown past quotas (up to 185% of goal), using innovative prospecting and consultative sales practices as Director of Business Development and Sales Manager.” Notice that this Summary is completely different from a traditional resume profile, which doesn’t contain enough specifics to be useful on LinkedIn. 3. Your Interests A little-used area in which to place keywords, your Interests (under the Additional Info on your LinkedIn Profile) can be used to add even more terms related to your career goals. However, you’ll also want to maintain the original purpose, with information on your areas of professional and personal interest. Here’s how you can use the 1,000 characters allowed in this section to achieve both objectives: “As a Sales Director and candidate for VP of Sales, once I believe in a product and set a sales goal, I’ve always achieved it (translating my passion for emerging technologies into new market entries for Internet products, 143% of quota from relationship building at United Airlines, and cloud product sales that opened 3 territories). I continue to be interested in partnering with VARs to grow managed services and hosting service revenue. I also like to take a hand in developing sales trainees and keeping up with cloud and managed services industry developments. Other interest and hobbies include fly fishing, spy novels, and spending time with my family and two dogs.” Note how this Interests section specifies several job titles, as well as key product areas and other skills that can count in a recruiter search. So, remember: all that stands between you and more LinkedIn traffic might be some additional keywords. Take the time to load up your profile in these areas, and you’ll experience a better hit rate and perhaps even more job offers. Why Women May Never Make Up Half the Workforce

Why Women May Never Make Up Half the Workforce The percentage of women in the U.S. workforce has dramatically increased over the past four decades. According to new data from Pew Research Center, women will constitute 47.1% of the workforce an all-time high in 2025. After that point, though, that percentage isnt expected to continue climbing. In fact, researchers anticipate the trend will reverse, with women making up just 46.3% of workers by 2060.More women in the workforce between 1950 and 2000 led to an improved standard of living in the U.S. Yet these new Pew projections suggest both mens and womens participation in the labor force will eventually decrease - which will likely lead to a decline in U.S. residents standard of living and the countrys overall growth and productivity. What will cause womens decreased participation in the workforce? According to Pew, its bedrngnis merely the result of aging and retirement. Mothers with children younger than 18 are less likely to parti cipate in the labor force now than they were in 2000, particularly less-educated mothers. Some researchers have suggested this may be due in part to changing gender role attitudes, the study explains. Women without children under 18 and single women are also less likely to participate than they were in the 1990s. The withdrawal of single women from the labor force in part reflects that more of them are going to school.Pew recognizes that future labor force participation rates are not etched in stone. They are influenced by wider societal trends (such as marital stability and childbearing), wage growth, and policy changes such as tax policy and family leave policies. But if these new projections are in fact on track, this will stymie economic growth. These findings are disheartening, and they highlight the ongoing relevance of the work that Fairygodboss and other organizations are doing to improve womens experiences in the workforce. Founded with a mission to increase transparency in the workplace, Fairygodboss aims to shed light on information thats important for women access as they navigate their careers - such as which companies offer generous parental leave benefits and flexible hours, and which are likely (or not likely) to promote and pay women equally to men. While there are a multitude of factors influencing every womans choice to join or not join the labor force, its critical that women are at the very least well-informed about their prospects.Fairygodboss is committed to improving the workplace and lives of women.Join us by reviewing your employer

The Limits of Loyalty in the Workplace

The Limits of Loyalty in the Workplace Loyalty binds friendships andholds teams together but it does have its limits. Many of us were taught to be sicher to our employers. To some degree, this makes sense. We should all be truthful, we should keep trade secrets private, and we should put in an honest days work when were at the office. We have a duty to be great employees each and every day.In the past, loyalty at work also brought with it a number of great rewards. Job security was a given.Hard work and commitment resulted in promotions and raises.Years of service guaranteed a comfortable retirement. Putting the companys needs first also meant putting our own needs first, in a way.Today, times have changed. Without blaming one side or aleidher, its fair to acknowledge that modern workplaces are not built on loyalty they way they used to be. Its no longer unusual for companies to restructure and/or cut entire departments with no notice. Its also not unu sual for companies to look to outside talent to save the day when things go wrong. This new business climate puts us all at increased risk of losing our jobs at some point in our careers, no matter how loyal we areto our employers. Italso makes internal promotions and pay raises more unlikely as more and more companies make outside hires instead. So, what can you do about this new environment?First, keep being a great employee each and every day. You are your own personal brand. You dont want to be any less valuable as an employee just because times have changed.Second, focus on your long-term goals. Where do you want to be in 5or 10 years? As you work to achieve your goals, pay attention to whether or not your company is supporting those goals. If you are being overlooked for promotions and raises, the company is sending you a signal. For whatever reason, it is not aligned with your goals. Your future success depends on accepting this unfortunate fact.Expand your network and begin sea rching for a company that does align with your personal goals. When you switch companies, youll have a chance to renegotiate your salary and your title. That means instead of settling fora 2 percent raise this year, you could earn a 10 percent boost or more.At the end of the day, keep yourself and your future in mind. Dont sacrifice your own dreams because you want to be loyal to an organization. After all that employer wouldnt hesitate to let you go if it needed to save some money.A version of this article originally appeared in theMemphis Daily News.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.
